Is there anyway to avoid any side effects? Or, are they unavoidable? At the very least, what can be done to reduce them?

Most people who take medications don't experience the side effects, or experience only one or two of them. There is no guarantee, but a lot of alli's most unpleasant side effects are related to how much fat intake you have. So reducing fat intake, and in advance of starting the medication, should help a lot.

It makes sense that reducing fat intake would reduce the risk of side effects, because the drug must be doing something to the fat when you eat it.

How much should a person reduce their fat intake by?
